Looking for tech job info?  In this post, we’ll go through a day in the life for a computer repair technician. As you’ll see, there probably isn’t a standard day in this varied and dynamic profession.  If you asked a computer repair technician what their standard day consisted of they could probably list off 50 different tasks they might see on a daily basis.

The nature of changing technologies and the number of things that can go wrong with a PC mean that each day could involve anything from RAM upgrades and virus removal to data recovery and email setup.

One major factor in the role is whether the technician works onsite with customers (in the field) or from a workbench in a computer repair shop.

For the bench technician a broader range of skills are needed to handle the variety of computer/component brands and faults that they can see on a daily basis. Familiarity with PC maintenance software is essential for troubleshooting computer problems. Work hours tend to be more standard and travel is only required in the case of mobile repair services.

The field technician’s role is characterized by specialization. They travel/work at customer sites to support computer setup and administration operations. This can focus on specific OS and network types along some systems support (e.g. Sharepoint/email systems).

Training and ongoing learning is a daily part of the computer repair technician’s life with a necessity to stay current with product changes in the industry. This can include additional studies (e.g. certified computer service technician) or less formal seminars, conferences and online courses.

Working as computer repair technician isn’t going to be for everybody. Certainly the need for keeping up with studies and the travel involved in field technician work can put some off. However, for many it is the challenging dynamic workload that is what is most interesting about this profession.
