If you have just purchased a brand new Canon DSLR camera you must be very excited and ready to explore the wonderful world of photography. Most of you probably bought the DSLR with a kit lens that comes with it as a package. Although the kit lens is a good place to start, there are still many different types of canon lenses that a beginning or amateur photographer can experiment with. However, there is a specific class of lenses that you should definitely look into.


If you are just beginning to experiment with photography, it is usually a good idea to first get used to taking photos with a prime lens. Even more experienced photographers should have a prime lens if they do not already own one. Prime lenses are those with a fixed focal length and do not have a zooming function. Therefore, the only way to change the composition of your photograph is by moving your body along with the camera. This is actually a very good way to practice your photographic composition skills. Many photographers start off using a zoom lens and become lazy when they want to take a photo of something far away. They simply rotate the zooming ring to get a picture. However, with a prime lens you must move closer to the subject to get the same shot. This helps build experience with framing and will help you develop the indispensable skill of putting different perspectives on the subject of your photograph. Since you cannot zoom, you begin to explore other ways to take photos of the same subject. You will begin to take photos from different angles and explore with depth of field. These will all help you mature into a more artistic and imaginative photographer. A prime lens usually has very large aperture and are good for low light photography.  They are also usually sharper than zoom lens which makes them more suited for portraits. There are so many different ways one can utilize the power of a prime lens and thus every photographer should own one.
There are so many benefits in using a prime lens as a photographer. Do not let the fact that it does not have zooming features turn you off. You should return to using a prime lens every once in a while to help you generate more ideas for photographs and practice the basics of composition.
