If you are looking for a quality birthday present tech gadget or perhaps an early Christmas present for your significant other that loves to read.  I would recommend getting either the Kindle DX or the Kindle 3.  They are both excellent options and it just depends on what you are looking for.  Also, a huge factor could be on how much you want to spend.  The Kindle 3 is less expensive at $189, but the Kindle DX is $379 and offers more reading optionsI personally like the Kindle 3 because it is smaller and easier to carry around.  It is only 8.7 ounces and is only six inches diagonal.  The battery life is excellent and allows up to read up to 1 month on a single charge without using wireless and up to 10 days if you use the wireless.  The contrast is 50% better than any other e-reader when it came out.  It also is nice that if you are out in the sun you have no glare.

If you are looking for more reading options the Kindle DX is the option for you.  You can select from over 670,000 books.  There are also over 1.8 million free out-of-copyright pre-1923 books that are available to read on the Kindle. It also does provide the 50% better contrast for clearer text and sharpest images.  You can read your Kindle books on all your other devices as well.  The Kindle DX does allow you to connect to social networks like Twitter and Facebook.  So if there is a passage that touches you and you want to share with your friends you can it makes life much easier for you.

They are both excellent options to chose from and would be a good investments to allow you to get rid of your bookshelf.  I have enjoyed using my Kindle and I know your significant other will love it as well.
